Challenges/Lessons

SWIMMING CHALLENGES

Would your child(ren) like to improve their swimming this year? They can attend weekly swimming sessions on Saturdays or on Mondays and Wednesdays during the summer holidays with our swimming teacher. The sessions culminate in a swimming challenge at the beginning of September, for which they'll earn a certificate. Training for the Saturday Challenges will begin on the 30th of May and will be held weekly on Saturday mornings / early afternoons.  Test day will be on the 6th of September. The summer holiday lessons will start on the 27th of July.

CHILDREN'S SWIMMING LESSONS

We are also offering beginner swimming lessons during the summer holidays on Monday and Wednesday mornings. There are three lesson types covering children aged from 6 months to 5 years. ADULT LESSONS

ADULT AND CHILDREN STROKE IMPROVEMENT LESSONS

Tadpoles

(Wednesday mornings in the school holidays)

Outcome by the end of the Summer Holidays:

Aimed at children from 1 to 3 years

5 pairs (5 children + 1 adult per child)

Outcome by end of Summer Holidays:

  • Water Safety for Adult & Child
  • Getting used to a pool environment
  • Learning through fun activities
  • (Adults to be prepared to sing!)

Tiddlers

(Monday and Wednesday mornings in the school holidays)

Aimed at children aged 3 to 4 years.

Outcome by the end of the Summer Holidays:

  • Safe water entry (swivel)
  • Swim 1 width on front (aided)
  • Swim 1 length on back (aided)
  • Push & glide on back > star float
  • Push & glide on front > rotate to back
  • Push ball across pool using front paddle
  • Answer 1 safety question
  • Climb out using steps

Little Frogs

(Monday and Wednesdays mornings in the school holidays)

Aimed at children aged 4 - 5 years.

Outcome by the end of the Summer Holidays:

  • Safe water entry (swivel)/Jump
  • 1 width on front (aided or unaided)
  • 1 width on back (aided or unaided)
  • Push & glide on back > star float
  • Push & glide on fron > rotate to back
  • Tread water (aided) for 5 secs
  • Retrieve toy from surface > place on float > return to side (swimming)
  • Answer 1 safety question
  • Climb out using steps

Big Frogs (Saturdays 9 am & 9.30 am)

9.00- 9.30 & 9.30 - 10.00

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Safe water entry (swivel)/Jump (return to side)
  • 1 width on front unaided
  • 1 width on back unaided
  • Push & glide on front > rotate onto back for star float (hold for 3 secs)
  • Tread water for 10 secs (aided if necessary)
  • Surface dive > collect sinker
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

(Saturdays 10am)

Saturday 10.00 - 10.30

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Jump in > return to side
  • 1 length on front
  • 1 length on back
  • Push & glide on front > rotate onto back for star float (hold for 10 secs)
  • Tread water for 20 secs
  • Mushroom float
  • Scull head first (1 width)
  • Surface dive > collect sinker
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Challenge 2

(Saturdays 10.30am)

Saturday 10.30 - 11.00

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Jump in
  • Swim 2.5 lengths clothed
  • Surface dive > collect sinker > swim down to shallow end & put sinker on side
  • Tread water for 1 minute
  • Scull 5 metres head first
  • Swim 10 lengths continuously
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Bronze Challenge (Saturdays 11am)

Saturday 11.00 - 11.30

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Jump in
  • Swim 10 meters > surface dive > swim 4 meters underwater
  • Tread water for 3 minutes
  • Scull head first for 15 meters
  • Swim 40 meters (18 lengths)
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Silver Challenge (Saturdays 11.30am)

Saturday 11.30am - 12.15pm 

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Dive in
  • Swim 100 meters (5 lengths) in less than 3 minutes using any stroke
  • Tread water for 2 minutes with one hand behind the back
  • Swim 10 meters followed by 2 surface dive (1 x head first, 1 x feet first) & bring up object on each occassion
  • Scull 15 metres head first & return to side sculling feet first
  • Swim 800 meters (36 lenghts) - 400 metres on front/400 meters on back
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Gold Challenge (Saturdays 12.15pm)

Saturday 12.15 - 1.00 pm

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Dive in
  • Swim 100 meters (5 lengths) in less than 2.5 minutes using any stroke
  • Tread water for 3 minutes with one hand above the head throughout
  • Scull 15 metres head first, move into tucked position, turn 360 degrees & return to side sculling feet first
  • Swim 15 meters, perform a forward somersault & continue swimming
  • Swim 800 meters (36 lenghts) using 3 different strokes in 25 mins or less (4 x F/C, 4 x B/S, 4 x B/S)
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Honours Challenge (Saturdays 1pm)

Saturday 1.00 - 1.45 pm

Outcome for Test Day:

  • Straddle jump
  • Swim 5 meters > surface dive > collect brick > travel on back to shallow end > land brick on side without putting feet on floor
  • Scull 10 meters > backwards somersault > back layout > rotate to front > forward somersault > front layout > tuck/rotate onto back > scull feet first for 15 meters
  • Swim 2 lengths butterfly, 10 lengths front crawl, 10 lengths backstroke, 20 lengths freestyle incorporating 2 head first & 2 feet first surface dives & swim through 2 hoops 4 meters apart without surfacing. To be completed in 20 minutes or less without a pause
  • Answer 2 safety questions
  • Climb out unaided

Adult lessons

Non swimmers

Goal by the end of the season:

* Swim 1 width on their front unaided

* Swim 1 width on their back unaided

* Push and glide (front)

* Push and glide (back)

* Push, glide and rotate from front to back

* Pick up an object off the bottom of the pool (no deeper than half way up the pool)

Beginners

Goal by the end of the season:



* Swim 1 length on their front

* Swim 1 length on their back

* Head first scull for 12 meters (1/2 length)

* Feet first scull for 12 meters (1/2 length)

* Push, glide and rotate front to back

* Push and glide on front before returning to side whilst remaining on their front

* Pick up a brick off the bottom of the pool in the deepest part

Stroke Improvement

Sessions for front crawl, back stroke and breast stroke.
